What Is Passivhaus?
Passivhaus (from the German “passive house”) is a building standard that enables the construction of homes and buildings with extremely low energy demand for heating and cooling, while ensuring maximum indoor comfort, health and efficiency.
It is a smarter and more responsible way of building, where every detail is designed to reduce energy consumption without compromising design or quality of life.
How do you build a Passivhaus home?
Achieving a Passivhaus building requires applying a set of technical principles with precision. The main ones are:
1. Optimized thermal insulation adapted to the climate
Insulation is one of the core elements of Passivhaus. But it is not the same everywhere.
- In colder climates like Huesca, thicker insulation is required.
- In milder zones like Valencia, the insulation can be lighter.
Walls, roofs and floors are carefully studied to ensure maximum energy performance in each climate zone.
2. Thermal bridge-free construction
Thermal bridges are weak points where insulation is interrupted (like joints, corners or window frames).
If they are not addressed properly, they allow unwanted heat or cold to enter, and can also cause moisture or mold.
Passivhaus eliminates thermal bridges through precise design and execution.
3. High-performance windows and doors
Windows and doors must have very low thermal transmittance. Double or triple glazing is often used, with special coatings that:
- Let in solar heat during winter
- Block excessive heat in summer
This ensures year-round comfort with minimal energy consumption.
4. Airtightness and controlled ventilation
A Passivhaus is airtight. This does not mean it is sealed off from the outside. It means that uncontrolled air leakage is prevented.
All points in the building envelope, such as around pipes, cables and junctions, are carefully sealed.
To ensure clean and healthy indoor air, a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery is installed. This system:
- Continuously renews indoor air
- Maintains a stable temperature
- Filters out impurities and allergens from outside
It is as if the house has its own lungs.
